Why do expatriates feel better working in Mexico than in their home countries?
Is the salary in Mexico better than in other countries? According to a recent study by the human resources solutions provider, Mauve Group, a large percentage of expatriates in Mexico report a high level of income satisfaction, as they believe they earn more than in their home countries.
First, it’s important to understand what an expatriate is. According to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), an expatriate is someone who lives outside their homeland and/or country of origin.
Latin American companies are entering the era of ‘Planism,’ where physical location is no longer a limitation but a strategic decision that allows value creation and competitive advantage. This movement emphasizes that physical location is not a barrier but rather a strategic choice.
Expatriates in Mexico Earn More Than in Their Home Countries
Mexico is a center of growth and innovation in Latin America offering a high quality of life, which is highly valued by expatriates. So much so that the country ranks second among the best places to live abroad, due to “the competitiveness of local salaries."
In this regard, figures from the "Planism" report, prepared by Mauve Group, revealed that 76.9% of 200 expatriates surveyed in Mexico said they were "very satisfied with their current income," as they believe they are earning more than they could in their home country.
While relocation involves more than just changing companies, housing, or schools—it also encompasses professional life, fiscal obligations, and even immigration status—the results are positive when measuring labor productivity, satisfaction, and quality of life.
Considering the topic of relocation, the research revealed that relocation preferences vary by region of origin. For example, 38.7% of Americans and Canadians prefer Mexico, 30.1% of Europeans, particularly from Germany, prefer Brazil, and 24.2% of Asians, primarily from India, prefer Colombia.
Why do North Americans choose Mexico? According to the study, 51.4% mentioned that their personal quality of life improved from "better" to "much better" when they arrived in the country. 71.6% said it was "much better," and only 14.5% thought it was "worse." Although there are some complaints in the country, even from citizens regarding salary levels, foreigners have a different opinion.
In this regard, although salaries in Mexico tend to be lower compared to countries like the United States or Singapore, it is the cost of living that draws attention. A technology professional in Mexico earns an average of $3,165 USD per month, while in the U.S., the average is $10,154 USD. However, in the former case, there are lower expenses for housing, food, and transportation.
So, do you think Mexico is a good country to work in?
